SNAPSHOT: FIT4MOM Philadelphia is the city’s premiere fitness program for moms, offering fun, rewarding, and effective pre-and post-natal exercise classes and support for every stage of motherhood including Stroller Strides, Stroller Barre, and Fit4Baby.
Q. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how FIT4MOM Philadelphia started?
A. Carolyn Kaufmann launched FIT4MOM Philadelphia in 2012. Carolyn found it difficult to find time to exercise while balancing the demands of being a stay-at-home mom. When she learned about FIT4MOM and its signature Stroller Strides class, she believed that many moms in the city would benefit from the program and decided to launch a Philadelphia franchise.
We both joined FIT4MOM Philadelphia as clients this past winter and quickly fell in love with the Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre classes. Discovering FIT4MOM Philadelphia was a blessing. Not only did we work toward our fitness goals while spending time with our children, but we met so many fantastic, like-minded moms who quickly became wonderful new friends.
When the opportunity to take on ownership of the business presented itself, there was no way we could turn it down. We had developed firsthand knowledge of just how valuable the program is to Philadelphia moms, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to express our appreciation and gratitude than by ensuring that the program continued to thrive.
Once we made the decision to purchase the franchise, we became trained and certified instructors and immersed ourselves in every single aspect of running the business, all while taking care of our toddler sons. We feel honored to be able to continue to bring FIT4MOM Philadelphia, and all that it has to offer, to moms in the city, and we have many great plans in store for the business in the months to come!
Q. What are some FAQ’s for new or potential members to know about FIT4MOM Philadelphia?
A. FIT4MOM Philadelphia is definitely a unique program, and many of our new and potential members are first-time moms, so we often get asked:
FAQ: How long do I need to wait until after my baby is born to start taking classes? And how old are the children in your classes?
A. You are welcome to begin Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre classes as soon as you have completed your 6-week postpartum check-up. Once you have your physician’s approval, come join us! You may start Fit4Baby classes as soon as you learn you are expecting and have received your physician’s clearance.
Our stroller-based workouts include children from 6 weeks of age up to 6 years of age. As long as your child is able to remain comfortable and secure in a stroller throughout the class, they are welcome! During the cool-down and stretching portions of class, many moms take their littles ones out of the strollers so that they may run around, explore, and socialize with other children while moms relax.
FAQ: What should I bring to class, and do I need a special kind of stroller?
A. FOR MOM:
A jogging stroller is not required. In class we walk, power walk, jog, or run. Bring a sturdy stroller that is not prone to tipping so that your child is comfortable and secure throughout the 60-minute class. Please do not bring an umbrella stroller.
FAQ: I’m nervous that my child is going to cry and scream during class. What should I do if that happens?
A. Join the club! All of the babies and toddlers will cry, fuss, or be upset at some point. We’ve all been there. Try to relax and keep calm. (Easier said than done, we know!) Your child’s happiness and safety and your enjoyment of the workout are our top priorities. Because we stop at regular intervals for strengthening/toning exercises, you can always step away to soothe or nurse your child and then catch up with us if you fall behind. In addition, instructors will do their best to step in and entertain children while class continues. If your child ever fusses so much that you need to leave class, we will be happy to credit you another class.
On some days, your child will just not want to cooperate, and that’s OK! As you attend class more frequently and develop a routine, your child will adapt to it. Most importantly, don’t allow these temporary hurdles or frustrations derail your ultimate fitness goals.
FAQ: Do you offer any evening or weekend classes for working moms?
A. Yes! FIT4MOM Philadelphia has a wonderful and thriving group of working moms with full-time and part-time careers. Our goal is to include stay-at-home and working moms in as many activities as possible, from our fitness classes to our play groups, family activities, and Moms’ Nights Out.
Currently, we hold Saturday morning classes as well as Monday and Wednesday evening sessions. Please be sure to check our Class Schedule for updated information about our class offerings.
FAQ: I feel really out of shape and intimidated by group fitness classes. Am I going to be able to keep up?
A. We have moms of all fitness levels and all body types in our programs. Whether you’re a first-time exerciser or marathon runner, you will find your stride with us. Each class is designed so that you are able to complete it no matter what your current fitness level may be. We encourage you to always listen to your body and exercise at a pace that leaves you feeling challenged yet energized. Set realistic expectations, and don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself to attend class every day at the very beginning; instead, start out slowly, build up gradually, and work toward increasing the number of days as well as the intensity of your workouts. We are here to support you wherever you are in your fitness journey, and our ultimate goal is to help you improve your physical strength and cardiovascular endurance in order to give you strength for motherhood!
