PHILLY BABY BUMP EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MARY FREIHOFNER, OWNER:
Q. Can you tell us about your Pregnancy Facial?
A. Sure. You first make an appointment with us and then we do a skin analysis for every new client. The esthetician looks at your skin under the s and gives you feedback. We then start the facial by using a papaya enzyme that lightly eats away dead skin. Then we do a gentle and cautious extraction of black head and zits.
Next comes a pure Vitamin C peel and a calming mask. Lastly, we give you a facial massage followed by a light body and arm massage. It is important to reiterate that all of the products that we use during the facial are natural and safe to use on pregnant women.
Q. What skin issues do pregnant women come to you for?
A. While it varies, most pregnant women who come to Affordable Skin Care had a little bit of acne when they were in their teenage years and are now experiencing flare ups due to pregnancy hormones. The difference is that a lot of pregnant women not only get acne on their face but can also experience severe acne on their necks or backs.
Acne during pregnancy is especially challenging because you can’t use prescription drugs such as Retinol-A nor over the counter products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
Q. What products do you recommend that are safe to use during pregnancy?
A. I recommend using a good cleanser or facial cleansing gel at night that doesn’t contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and then finishing off with a nice oil-free moisturizer or vitamin C serum. I would stick with just water and an oil-free moisturizer in the morning so that you don’t dry your skin.
We use the following products in our salon on pregnant woman:
Hylunia Facial Cleansing Gel (5.1 oz) $25
Hylunia Facial Cleansing Gel is our best selling cleanser. It has all natural ingredients including sodium hyaluronate which holds water on the skin leaving it supple and hydrated. It is also Organic, Paraben-Free, Phosphate-Free, Fragrance-Free and Vegan.
Peter Thomas Roth Ultra Lite Oil-Free Moisturizer (1.7 oz) $42
Peter Thomas Roth is a light, vitamin filled moisturizer that will not clog pores. It is also safe for oily, clogging and acne skin.
Q. What was your inspiration for opening Affordable Skin Care?
A. Affordable Skin Care was inspired by my own skin issues that ranged from acne when I was young to cystic acne when I was adult . I visited several doctors, went on diets, and bought tons of over the counter products but nothing helped with my acne. I finally found an esthetician in Florida that really helped me and through that became interested in becoming an esthetician myself.
I moved to Philadelphia and went to school to help people with acne. I loved that I was helping people from a clinical perspective, this wasn’t about a luxury service. Acne is not categorized as a “health” issue but can be a very emotional issue that can cause anxiety and low self-esteem. Soon after, I opened Affordable Skin care with the goal of focusing on clinical skin care and acne. Our staff has advanced esthetician training and takes pride in helping people with their skin issues.
